چکیده

In laboratory public goods experiments, subjects make decisions about how much of a fixed endowment to contribute to the production of a public good in a sequence of periods. The nature of subjects’ responses to information about others’ decisions can help distinguish between alternative motives for giving, such as altruism, warm glow, reciprocity and inequality aversion. In this paper we reanalyze two published experimental studies of public goods and focus on the nature individuals’ responses to others’ behavior. We find economically and statistically significant dynamic interactions among subjects. The dynamic patterns indicate support for reciprocity and inequality aversion motives, but little for altruism and warm glow. We also conclude that individual-level analysis of existing public goods data can provide more insightful, informative estimates of treatment effects on behavior. Finally, we cast doubt on the notion that random rematching of subjects can induce statistical or strategic independence across decision periods. JEL Codes: C9, H41, Z13

Neural responses to taxation and voluntary giving reveal motives for charitable donations.

Civil societies function because people pay taxes and make charitable contributions to provide public goods. One possible motive for charitable contributions, called "pure altruism," is satisfied by increases in the public good no matter the source or intent. Another possible motive, "warm glow," is only fulfilled by an individual's own voluntary donations. Consistent with pure altruism, we fin...

Revisiting Confusion in Public Goods Experiments

Theories put forth to explain cooperation in public goods experiments usually assume either that subjects cooperate because they do not understand the game’s incentives or that cooperation stems from social motives such as altruism and reciprocity. Recent research by Andreoni (1995) is an important first attempt to distinguish the roles of confusion and social motives in these environments. How...

VCM or PPM? A comparison of the performance of two voluntary public goods mechanisms

Little progress has been made toward understanding the relative performance of the two mechanisms most widely used for fundraising: the Voluntary Contribution (VCM) and Provision Point (PPM) mechanisms. This paper provides direct comparisons of the relative performance of variants of the VCM and PPM as they are most commonly implemented in the field. The research makes use of 1296 individual ob...
